When I say "heart healthy eating", do you think of rubbery, bland chicken breasts and flavorless steamed vegetables?  If so, then you haven't experienced the Mediterranean diet.

In the early 60's, researchers noticed that the people living in southern Italy, Crete and Greece had lower rates of heart disease. One of the main reasons for it is olive oil. Olive oil is a staple in Mediterranean cuisine and has been for over 6,000 years. It is rich in heart healthy monounsaturated fat. However, the Mediterranean diet is more than olive oil, it is a lifestyle. The traditional diet combines generous servings of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens and legumes. While grains, olive oil or other monounsaturated oils with small amounts of red meat and wine are fine in moderation.  But it's more than just the particular foods you eat, the meals are enjoyed and it is an opportunity for family and friends to eat and laugh together.

People of the Mediterranean live active lives as well.  It is the whole picture:  delicious healthy food, enjoyment of meals with family and lifestyle activity that is the essence of health.
